Conversion Rates

If you have ever been to a foreign country with a currency other than your own, you are very familiar with conversion rates. Often the first thing people do once they land in their destination country is convert some cash. This can be done almost anywhere, from within the airport itself, to stands in the center of the most popular tourist areas. However, just because you can convert cash anywhere, doesn’t mean you should. Conversion rates, commission fees, and other costs will cause you to lose a lot of money in the process. Here are some tips on how to avoid that.

First, check on a resource such as Forex Daily to see exactly what the rates are, without commission fees worked in. You will see that your currency may be worth more, or less, depending on the place you are converting.

Second, wait until you are in your destination to withdraw cash. Cash machines will give you money in the local currency, and the withdrawal fee will always be cheaper than converting hard cash.

Third, if you have cash to convert, don’t do it in the airport and other popular tourist areas. These usually have the least favorable conversion rates.
